Hierarchy and Resources
In the side bar of the editor there are the Hierarchy and Resources lists.
Hierarchy
The tree of objects of the project. An object inside another follows its parent in position, rotation and scale, which is what makes groups useful.
- Select: Click the item. Ctrl adds or removes one item, and Shift picks every item between the last one you clicked and the new one.
- Reorder and reparent: Drag an item into another one or between them.
- Group and ungroup: From the context menu of the item.
- Hide: With the eye icon. The hidden object stays in the project.
- Lock: With the padlock icon. A locked object cannot be selected or dragged in the viewport, only from the hierarchy, and locking a group locks what is inside it.
- Rename: Long click on the name.
- Search: Filters the list by the name of the object.
With several objects selected, the context menu acts on all of them: rename, duplicate, group and the geometry operations happen at once, and a single Ctrl+Z undoes the whole batch.
Objects created by modules depend on the module being loaded. When it is not, the item appears marked as unavailable and only accepts being renamed or deleted, so the content that cannot be read is not corrupted.
An asset appears as a single item, with its own icon: what is inside it belongs to the source project and is not listed.
Resources
The list of materials and textures of the project.
Resources are shareable. The same material can be on several objects, and changing it changes all of them at once. That is why a material and a texture are not kept inside the object, but referenced by it.
