Path

Curves drawn as lines, with no mesh, that become a solid inside Extrude.

Path

A Path is a drawing made of curves: sequences of points joined by lines, open or closed. It has no mesh, faces or material, and it only shows in the viewport, as a guide or as a drawing. It is not part of the render.

Where a path comes from

  • SVG: importing an SVG file with Import, or dragging it into the viewport away from any object, creates a path with its drawing, lying on the ground with its longest side 2 meters long. Each fill color of the file becomes its own path, already filled with that color, inside a group named after the file. Dropped on an object, the SVG still becomes a texture.
  • DWG and DXF: the lines of an imported CAD drawing arrive as a path.
  • MCP: an agent can draw paths point by point or from the text of an SVG.

The plain path has no button in the toolbar, because there is no tool to draw curves by hand. The two types made from parameters, Text Path and Shape Path, are in Add Object.

Fill

With Fill on, the closed area of the curves gets a surface in the chosen color. Open curves stay as lines only.

When a curve is inside another one, Holes decides what is a hole:

  • Every inner curve: Every curve inside another one is a hole, and a curve inside the hole is filled again. This is the default.
  • By curve direction: The direction of each curve decides, as in SVG: the inner curve is a hole only when it runs opposite to the outer one. An imported SVG uses the rule of the file itself.

Becoming a solid

Placed inside Extrude, the path becomes a solid: the closed area of the curves gets thickness, with the holes kept. The other modifiers also accept a path and work on its flat surface.
